UPCOMING: In industrialized countries c. 40% of food is wasted especially in the life cycle phases of retail, restaurants and households. About 90 Million tons of food waste are generated in the EU per year. This situation is not acceptable.

THIS CHALLENGE WILL START SOON !

ELIMINATING FOOD WASTE IS A CHALLENGE

The open innovation challenge is to eliminate food waste by design and innovation (including social innovation) by reducing food waste in DC's (Production, Handling and Processing) and IC's (Retail, Services and Households).

BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM

All that food had to be produced in the first place consuming huge amounts of energy, water, land use and other resources. In industrialized countries around 40% of food is wasted especially in the life cycle phases of retail, services and households. This situation is not acceptable.   Watch this documentary for the US: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8TDfjbpSBE&feature=youtu.be

THE CHALLENGE

The challenge is to eliminate food waste by design and innovation (including social innovation). We have to help retailers, restaurant owners and private households to better deal with

  •   food ordering and purchase,
  •   food storage and preservation, and
  •   food preparation and using left overs etc.

COMPETITION

This challenge will be launched on the open innovation platform www.innonatives.com to develop and deliver creative and innovative solutions. The best solutions will be chosen by crowd voting and an expert jury. Assuming they get enough support from the international community, these solutions will advance to the crowd funding section where they can raise a budget for implementation.

JURY

POTENTIAL PARTNERS (to be confirmed)

  •   UN FAO
  •   WRAP UK, EU Fusion Project
  •   Zero waste Europe
  •   Slow food Europe
  •   ACR+ (Federation of Municipalities)

What materials have to be submitted in the first phase? How much the idea has to be developed? Thank you! Hugs!

  2. INFO INFO

Dear Mikkk, this text is not finished yet. We will update it soon. in the first phase probably just good ideas about the intervention that you like to propose, short text and a photo or link to a video or case study or similar..... thanks ;-)

I am Bhavna Sharma, Post-doctoral research Associate at Iowa State University (ISU). I am writing you in connection to use of the Open-Innovation and -Design for Sustainability Platform for the Sustainability Engineering and International Development (SEID) course. The SEID course instructors are Dr. Brian Steward (Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering) and Dr. Say Kee Ong (Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering). I am assisting Dr. Seward and Dr. Ong with course development tasks. The SEID course is comprised of six lecture modules and a team project. Team projects, constitutes 60% of the course grade, are focused on the application of sustainable engineering principles in the context of developed or developing world scenarios. The average size of class is about 35 students and is comprised of sudents from agricultural, chemical, computer, electrical, mechanical, civil, biosystems engineering departments. The students work in teams for their semester projects. They work on sustainability related projects with professors in different departments who are willing to provide their labs, resources, and technical assistance throughout semester. For next session, Fall 2015, we are thinking of trying something different and Dr. Brian Steward forwarded me the link to Open-Innovation and -Design for Sustainability Platform. The platform look really interesting and this is something that we would like to implement. But I need to completely understand the platform and its functioning. Following are few questions that came to my mind after reading about the platform. I understand that it can go two ways: starting a new challenge or joining the existing challenge. For this particular course I envision students joining the existing challenges and providing solutions would be an excellent project. As you describe mostly there will be three phases for a challenge: the idea, concepts and solutions. • Each challenge will have its own timeline and number of phases. But students enrolled in the course have one semester starting from August-December. If the timeline of the challenge is longer than the semester. Then how we grade students? • Students have to pass through each stage. So for example one group is stuck in the concept stage and does not graduate to next stage while other group gets to the solution stage. The first group might have given their 100% but was not able to pass the stage. Then how we grade the two groups. If a group is stuck at concept phase would you provide assistance so that they can pass onto next stage? I think this platform will be a great learning opportunity for students to get hands-on experience with sustainability projects. However, I will need some guidance on its implementation. I look forward to hearing from you.
