Give a plant cutting or seeds saved from plants you have grown yourself. It is environmentally friendly and low cost, but the benefits of the gift can last for years.

Plants can bring all sorts of benefits to those who grow them.  Gardening is a relaxing pastime and it is enjoyable to see a plant grow and bloom over time.  Plants can even be grown on a window ledge if you don't have a garden.  With fruit, vegetables and herbs, growing your own can be even more satisfying.  You can grow more varieties than you might be able buy in the supermarkets and perhaps keep rare varieties alive.  Knowing that a plant came from a friend or family member can also have sentimental value.

Advice on saving seeds and taking cuttings is readily available on the internet.

Christmas may not always be the best time of year to take cuttings, so prepare in advance by potting up cuttings earlier in the year and looking after them well.  Seeds can be collected at the appropriate time for the plant and stored in envelopes until Christmas. If you have to post the gift, seeds may be easier than cuttings.

The picture above shows pineapple sage, a gorgeous-smelling herb that propagates well through cuttings.
