Solution for this problem would have to deal with 3 aspects:

  1. How can we improve the use of wood heating installations?
  2. How can we show and evaluate the impact and potential of “non-optimal” fire products
  3. How can we optimize the “non-optimal” fire products to be as efficient as possible.

Ad 1) Since humankind has invented the fire several 10.000 years ago; people think they know how to make a fire. Especially in the starting phase many mistakes can be done with very negative effects on the PM and other emissions. This problem is multiplied in case of bad quality fire products. Here a guideline in a mobile app maybe linked with a gamification approach could change the mindset, awareness and the used practices.

Ad 2) Research has been done to identify the optimal wood quality for heating installations. However what is still missing is to show and evaluate also bad quality fire products. Beside this more analysis has to be done to show the effects of burning other organic materials instead of wood. Especially in rural areas people are throwing organic waste into their heating installations if they do not have a composter. A solution should consist of a more detailed know-how and research on the effects of different organic products and wood qualities in households that might be used for heating.

Ad 3) In order to optimize the results of non-optimal wood fire products a research has to be done to identify potential effects and this has to be communicated. Again the communication tool could be an app showing the results. A virtual reality tool incl. sensors on the app on mobile phone could identify the quality of the fire product and wood and then show the ecological food print when burning.
